In libraryland, “medium rare” refers not to steak but to a print culture time zone of fluctuating proportions… printed matter that is not “rare,” but was produced by the revolutions in paper-making and printing technology, literacy and advertising and libraries, that started in the 1820s. When it ends depends on which technological transformations and cultural shifts you cook into your history. In some ways, we are still medium rare.

And “square”? An invocation of the geometric paradigm that governs medium-rare visual and textual productions, and continues to dominate our screen interfaces.
